«Галактика Гутенберга» — один из самых значительных трудов канадского ученого Маршалла Мак-Люэна, литературоведа, социолога, культуролога, известного представителя техницизма в философии культуры. В «Галактике Гутенберга» представлен мозаический подход к историческим проблемам. После естественности и гармоничности отношений, присущих трайбализму, наступила эпоха абсолютной власти визуализации. Главный грех западной цивилизации — создание алфавита и письменности на его основе. Возникла «галактика Гутенберга», где все грамотные люди — в той или иной мере расщепленные личности, шизофреники. Это привело к деколлективизации, детрайбализации, индивидуализму. А поощряя индивидуализм, книгопечатание в то же время порождает национализм, превращая язык как способ коммуникации в замкнутую систему. С наступлением электронной эры, символом которой является аудиовизуальная аппаратура, человеческое сознание присоединяется к замкнутой глобальной системе видеокоммуникаций. Это способствует развитию мозга, а на планете возникает прообраз новой цивилизации — электронного трайбализма, эры планетарного униформизма, или, по Мак-Люэну, «глобальной деревни».
