Карету везут восемь лошадей, и это действительно «не роскошь, а средство передвижения» — весит она около четырёх тонн (размеры — 7,3 х 2,4 м, и высота — 3,6 м). Создавал карету английский мастер, а расписывал итальянский живописец Джованни Киприани, который, в частности, пригласили расписать потолки в нескольких зала Букингемского дворца.

Вся отделка кареты, все фигуры и украшения имеют определённый смысл. Так, тритоны, двое из которых, в передней части кареты, дуют в раковины — дорогу монарху! — символизируют владычество Британии над океанами, об этом же говорят изображения Нептуна и его супруги Амфитриты со свитой на задней нижней панели. Три фигурки херувимов, которые поддерживают корону и держат в руках скипетр, державный меч и орденские знаки, символизируют Англию, Шотландию и Ирландию. На задней панели изображены Темза и собор Святого Павла, на задней верхней — королевский герб и роза Англии, чертополох Шотландии, трилистник Ирландии; на передней — Виктория-Победа преподносит Британии лавровый венок победительницы (в честь присоединения Канады). Огромные колёса напоминают колёса древнеримских триумфальных колесниц.

Карету, разумеется, неоднократно обновляли, и порой суммы были очень большими, сравнимыми с изначальной стоимостью кареты. Зато когда она сейчас проезжает по улицам, можно сказать, что лондонцы видят её такой же, какой видели её их предки век-другой назад. Правда, не всегда те были доброжелательны — сохранился счёт за замену разбитых стеклянных окон кареты (так, в 1795 году кто-то выразил своё недовольство Георгу III, отправлявшемуся на открытие парламента). Внутри карета отделана бархатом и атласом, сбруя лошадей — из красной марокканской кожи.

Елизавета II воспользовалась ею всего три раза — на коронации и во время серебряной (25 лет) и золотой (50 лет) годовщин своего восхождения на престол. Всё остальное время карета стоит, как и остальные экипажи, в королевских конюшнях Букингемского дворца. Главный кучер однажды сказал в интервью: «Карету поддерживают кожаные ремни, и она качается не только вперёд-назад, но и из стороны в сторону, так что я не думаю, что ехать в ней удобно или приятно». Что ж, это не просто экипаж, это символ.

О сокровищах Британии можно рассказывать бесконечно. За прошедшие века в истории этой страны, как и везде, бывало всякое — и то, чем гордятся, и то, что не хотелось бы упоминать.
