В индуистской традиции кобра с капюшоном символизирует шакти кундалини, или созидательную энергию вселенной, из которой фонтанирует жизнь. Она же является посредником между верховным богом Шивой и смертным человеком. Движение шакти в циклах эволюции достигает кульминации в жизни человека. В этой традиции считается, что на макушке расположена седьмая чакра. Чакра- санскритское слово, означает "колесо"; эти поверхности тела считаются скрученными кольцами энергии, которые могут быть каким-то образом связаны с нервными центрами. Когда сила змеи прорывается сквозь черепную коробку, а заодно и сквозь сознание или мысль, она приносит просветление — наивысшее состояние жизни. В варианте, представленном Сфинксом, великая Шакти сворачивается и кладёт свою голову в капюшоне прямо в центре лба на уровне бровей.
