Монография представляет собой первый опыт культурной истории русско-турецких контактов с момента установления дипломатических отношений в конце XV века и вплоть до Крымской войны. Автор показывает, что претерпевшие серьезную эволюцию российские представления об Османской империи являются важным аспектом как российского открытия Востока, так и непростых отношений России с Западом. Основываясь на таких источниках, как дневники и воспоминания участников «турецких кампаний», рассказы пленников, дипломатическая переписка, статистические публикации и описания путешествий, В. Таки анализирует восприятие военными, дипломатами и образованной публикой в целом многовекового исторического соперника России. В исследовании, в частности, прослеживается, как формирование образов «Европы» и «Востока» в сознании россиян XVIII и XIX столетий оказало влияние на формирование модерной российской идентичности.
