So he gave Taffy the shark’s tooth, and she lay down flat on her tummy with her legs in the air, like some people on the drawing-room floor when they want to draw pictures, and she said, ‘Now I’ll draw you some beautiful pictures! You can look over my shoulder, but you mustn’t joggle. First I’ll draw Daddy fishing. It isn’t very like him; but Mummy will know, because I’ve drawn his spear all broken. Well, now I’ll draw the other spear that he wants, the black-handled spear. It looks as if it was sticking in Daddy’s back, but that’s because the shark’s tooth slipped and this piece of bark isn’t big enough. That’s the spear I want you to fetch; so I’ll draw a picture of me myself ‘splaining to you. My hair doesn’t stand up like I’ve drawn, but it’s easier to draw that way. Now I’ll draw you. I think you’re very nice really, but I can’t make you pretty in the picture, so you mustn’t be ‘fended. Are you ‘fended?’

The Stranger-man (and he was a Tewara) smiled (Незнакомец (а он был Теварец) улыбнулся). He thought (он подумал), ‘There must be a big battle going to be fought somewhere (наверное, где-то будет большое сражение; to fight — сражаться, бороться), and this extraordinary child (и этот удивительнейший ребенок), who takes my magic shark’s tooth (который берет мой волшебный акулий зуб) but who does not swell up or burst (но который не опухает и не лопается), is telling me to call all the great Chief’s tribe to help him (настоятельно просит меня позвать все племя великого Вождя на помощь ему). He is a great Chief (он великий Вождь), or he would have noticed me (иначе он бы обратил на меня внимание).’

The Stranger-man (and he was a Tewara) smiled. He thought, ‘There must be a big battle going to be fought somewhere, and this extraordinary child, who takes my magic shark’s tooth but who does not swell up or burst, is telling me to call all the great Chief’s tribe to help him. He is a great Chief, or he would have noticed me.’

‘Look,’ said Taffy (слушай, — сказала Тэффи), drawing very hard and rather scratchily (рисуя очень энергично и довольно грубо), ‘now I’ve drawn you (вот я нарисовала тебя), and I’ve put the spear that Daddy wants into your hand (и я вложила в твою руку острогу, которая нужна Папочке), just to remind you that you’re to bring it (лишь для того чтобы напомнить тебе, что ты должен ее принести). Now I’ll show you how to find my Mummy’s living address (сейчас я покажу тебе, как найти местожительство моей Мамочки). You go along till you come to two trees (ты двигаешься вперед /по дороге/, пока не доходишь до двух деревьев) (those are trees (то деревья)), and then you go over a hill (а потом ты переходишь через холм) (that’s a hill (то холм)), and then you come into a beaver-swamp all full of beavers (а потом ты входишь = попадаешь в бобровое болото, очень полное = где полным-полно бобров). I haven’t put in all the beavers (я не вставила всех бобров), because I can’t draw beavers (потому что я не умею рисовать бобров), but I’ve drawn their heads (но я нарисовала их головы), and that’s all you’ll see of them (и это все, что ты от них увидишь) when you cross the swamp (когда ты будешь проходить по болоту; to cross — пересекать, переходить через).

‘Look,’ said Taffy, drawing very hard and rather scratchily, ‘now I’ve drawn you, and I’ve put the spear that Daddy wants into your hand, just to remind you that you’re to bring it. Now I’ll show you how to find my Mummy’s living address. You go along till you come to two trees (those are trees), and then you go over a hill (that’s a hill), and then you come into a beaver-swamp all full of beavers. I haven’t put in all the beavers, because I can’t draw beavers, but I’ve drawn their heads, and that’s all you’ll see of them when you cross the swamp.

Mind you don’t fall in (смотри не свались в /воду/)! Then our Cave is just beyond the beaver-swamp (итак, наша Пещера как раз за бобровым болотом). It isn’t as high as the hills really (на самом деле она не такая высокая, как холмы), but I can’t draw things very small (но я не умею рисовать предметы очень маленькими). That’s my Mummy outside (это снаружи моя Мамочка). She is beautiful (она красивая). She is the most beautifullest Mummy there ever was (она самая красивейшая Мамочка, которая когда-либо была), but she won’t be ‘fended (но она не обидится) when she sees I’ve drawn her so plain (когда /она/ увидит, что я нарисовала ее так некрасиво). She’ll be pleased of me (она будет довольна мной) because I can draw (потому что я умею рисовать). Now, in case you forget (вот, на тот случай если ты забудешь), I’ve drawn the spear (я нарисовала острогу) that Daddy wants outside our Cave (которая нужна Папочке, снаружи нашей Пещеры). It’s inside really (на самом деле она внутри), but you show the picture to my Mummy (но ты покажешь картинку моей Мамочке) and she’ll give it you (и она даст ее = острогу тебе). I’ve made her holding up her hands (я изобразила ее с поднятыми руками), because I know (потому что я знаю) she’ll be so pleased to see you (что она будет так рада видеть тебя). Isn’t it a beautiful picture (разве это не красивая картинка)? And do you quite understand (а ты полностью понял), or shall I ‘splain again (или объяснить тебе еще раз)?’

He said to himself (он сказал себе), ‘If I do not fetch this great Chief’s tribe to help him (если я не приведу племя этого великого Вождя на помощь ему), he will be slain by his enemies (он будет убит /его/ врагами; to slay — убивать) who are coming up on all sides with spears (которые приближаются со всех сторон с копьями). Now I see (теперь мне понятно) why the great Chief pretended not to notice me (почему великий Вождь сделал вид, что не замечает меня)! He feared that his enemies were hiding in the bushes (он опасался, что его враги прячутся в кустах) and would see him deliver a message to me (и увидят, как он передает мне сообщение; to deliver — вручать, передавать). Therefore he turned his back (поэтому он повернулся ко мне спиной), and let the wise and wonderful child draw the terrible picture (и позволил мудрому и удивительному ребенку нарисовать ужасную картину) showing me his difficulties (показывающую мне его трудности). I will away and get help for him from his tribe (я отправлюсь и приведу ему помощь от его племени).’ He did not even ask Taffy the road (он даже не спросил у Тэффи дорогу), but raced off into the bushes like the wind (но умчался в кусты как ветер), with the birch-bark in his hand (с березовой корой в /его/ руке), and Taffy sat down most pleased (а Тэффи села, очень довольная).

Now this is the picture (вот это картинка) that Taffy had drawn for him (которую Тэффи нарисовала для него)!

The Stranger-man (and he was a Tewara) looked at the picture and nodded very hard. He said to himself, ‘If I do not fetch this great Chief’s tribe to help him, he will be slain by his enemies who are coming up on all sides with spears. Now I see why the great Chief pretended not to notice me! He feared that his enemies were hiding in the bushes and would see him deliver a message to me. Therefore he turned his back, and let the wise and wonderful child draw the terrible picture showing me his difficulties. I will away and get help for him from his tribe.’ He did not even ask Taffy the road, but raced off into the bushes like the wind, with the birch-bark in his hand, and Taffy sat down most pleased.

Now this is the picture that Taffy had drawn for him!

‘What have you been doing, Taffy (что ты делала, Тэффи)?’ said Tegumai (спросил Тегумай). He had mended his spear (он уже починил свою острогу) and was carefully waving it to and fro (и осторожно размахивал ею /туда и сюда/).

‘It’s a little berangement of my own, Daddy dear (это моя небольшая обговоренность, дорогой Папочка; arrangement — договоренность, соглашение),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘If you won’t ask me questions (если ты не будешь задавать мне вопросов), you’ll know all about it in a little time (ты скоро узнаешь все об этом), and you’ll be surprised (и ты будешь удивлен). You don’t know how surprised you’ll be, Daddy (ты не знаешь, как ты удивишься, Папочка)! Promise you’ll be surprised (обещаю, что ты удивишься).’

‘What have you been doing, Taffy?’ said Tegumai. He had mended his spear and was carefully waving it to and fro.

‘It’s a little berangement of my own, Daddy dear,’ said Taffy. ‘If you won’t ask me questions, you’ll know all about it in a little time, and you’ll be surprised. You don’t know how surprised you’ll be, Daddy! Promise you’ll be surprised.’

‘Very well,’ said Tegumai (очень хорошо, — сказал Тегумай), and went on fishing (и продолжил рыбалку).

The Stranger-man (Незнакомец) — did you know he was a Tewara (вы знали, что он Теварец)? — hurried away with the picture (умчался с картинкой; to hurry away — поспешно уходить, уезжать) and ran for some miles (и бежал несколько миль; to run — бежать), till quite by accident he found Teshumai Tewindrow at the door of her Cave (пока совершенно случайно он /не/ нашел Тешумай Тевиндроу у двери ее Пещеры), talking to some other Neolithic ladies (беседующей с несколькими другими Неолитическими дамами) who had come in to a Primitive lunch (которые пришли на Первобытный обед). Taffy was very like Teshumai (Тэффи была очень похожа на Тешумай), especially about the upper part of the face and the eyes (особенно верхней частью лица и глазами), so the Stranger-man (поэтому Незнакомец) — always a pure Tewara (по-прежнему = все тот же чистокровный Теварец) — smiled politely and handed Teshumai the birch-bark (вежливо улыбнулся и вручил Тешумай березовую кору). He had run hard (он тяжело бежал), so that he panted (так что он запыхался), and his legs were scratched with brambles (а его ноги были исцарапаны ежевикой), but he still tried to be polite (но все равно он пытался быть вежливым).

‘Very well,’ said Tegumai, and went on fishing.

The Stranger-man — did you know he was a Tewara? — hurried away with the picture and ran for some miles, till quite by accident he found Teshumai Tewindrow at the door of her Cave, talking to some other Neolithic ladies who had come in to a Primitive lunch. Taffy was very like Teshumai, especially about the upper part of the face and the eyes, so the Stranger-man — always a pure Tewara — smiled politely and handed Teshumai the birch-bark. He had run hard, so that he panted, and his legs were scratched with brambles, but he still tried to be polite.

As soon as Teshumai saw the picture (как только Тешумай увидела картинку) she screamed like anything (она завизжала изо всех сил = как резаная) and flew at the Stranger-man (и налетела на Незнакомца; to fly at — нападать; набрасываться с бранью). The other Neolithic ladies at once knocked him down (остальные Неолитические дамы сразу сбили его с ног) and sat on him in a long line of six (и сели на него длинным рядом из шести /человек/), while Teshumai pulled his hair (в то время как Тешумай тягала его за волосы). ‘It’s as plain as the nose on this Stranger-man’s face (это ясно, как нос[95] на лице этого Незнакомца; plain — простой, ясный, плоский, некрасивый),’ she said (сказала она). ‘He has stuck my Tegumai all full of spears (он вонзил в моего Тегумая полным-полно копий), and frightened poor Taffy so (и так напугал бедную Тэффи) that her hair stands all on end (что у нее все волосы встали дыбом); and not content with that (и не удовольствовавшись этим), he brings me a horrid picture of how it was done (он приносит мне ужасную картинку того, как это было сделано). Look (смотрите)!’ She showed the picture to all the Neolithic ladies (она показала картинку всем Неолитическим дамам) sitting patiently on the Stranger-man (терпеливо сидевшим на Незнакомце). ‘Here is my Tegumai with his arm broken (вот мой Тегумай со сломанной рукой); here is a spear sticking into his back (вот копье, торчащее у него в спине); here is a man with a spear ready to throw (вот мужчина с копьем, готовый к броску); here is another man throwing a spear from a Cave (вот еще один мужчина, бросающий копье из Пещеры), and here are a whole pack of people (а вот целая банда /людей/)’ (they were Taffy’s beavers really (на самом деле это были бобры Тэффи), but they did look rather like people (но они все-таки весьма походили на людей)) ‘coming up behind Tegumai (подходящих сзади к Тегумаю). Isn’t it shocking (разве это не ужасно)!’
