Behind them was the Tribe in hierarchical order, from owners of four caves (one for each season), a private reindeer-run, and two salmon-leaps, to feudal and prognathous Villeins, semi-entitled to half a bearskin of winter nights, seven yards from the fire, and adscript serfs, holding the reversion of a scraped marrow-bone under heriot (Aren’t those beautiful words, Best Beloved?). They were all there, prancing and shouting, and they frightened every fish for twenty miles, and Tegumai thanked them in a fluid Neolithic oration.

Then Teshumai Tewindrow ran down and kissed and hugged Taffy very much indeed (потом Тешумай Тевиндроу сбежала вниз и поцеловала и обняла Тэффи очень сильно в самом деле = очень-очень сильно); but the Head Chief of the Tribe of Tegumai took Tegumai by the top-knot feathers and shook him severely (а Главный Вождь Племени Тегумая схватил Тегумая за пучок перьев на макушке и сурово тряхнул его).

‘Explain! Explain! Explain (объясни! объясни! объясни!)!’ cried all the Tribe of Tegumai (закричало все Племя Тегумая).

‘Goodness’ sakes alive (ради богов[106] / о боги!; for goodness sake — ради Бога; man alive — восклицание удивления: Боже правый! вот те на!)!’ said Tegumai. ‘Let go of my top-knot (отпусти мой пучок перьев на макушке). Can’t a man break his carp-spear without the whole countryside descending on him (разве человек не может сломать свою острогу на карпов без того, чтобы целая деревня не нагрянула на него)? You’re a very interfering people (вы очень назойливый народ; to interfere — вмешиваться).’

Then Teshumai Tewindrow ran down and kissed and hugged Taffy very much indeed; but the Head Chief of the Tribe of Tegumai took Tegumai by the top-knot feathers and shook him severely.

‘Explain! Explain! Explain!’ cried all the Tribe of Tegumai.

‘Goodness’ sakes alive!’ said Tegumai. ‘Let go of my top-knot. Can’t a man break his carp-spear without the whole countryside descending on him? You’re a very interfering people.’

‘I don’t believe you’ve brought my Daddy’s black-handled spear after all (я думаю, что вы тем не менее не принесли острогу моего Папочки с черной рукояткой: «я не полагаю, что вы принесли…, в конце концов»),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘And what are you doing to my nice Stranger-man (и что вы делаете с моим милым Незнакомцем)?’

‘I don’t believe you’ve brought my Daddy’s black-handled spear after all,’ said Taffy. ‘And what are you doing to my nice Stranger-man?’

They were thumping him by twos and threes and tens till his eyes turned round and round. He could only gasp and point at Taffy.

‘Where are the bad people who speared you, my darling?’ said Teshumai Tewindrow.

‘There weren’t any (не было никого),’ said Tegumai (сказал Тегумай). ‘My only visitor this morning was the poor fellow (моим единственным посетителем = единственным человеком, который навестил меня сегодня утром был тот бедный парень = бедняга) that you are trying to choke (которого вы пытаетесь задушить). ‘He came with a horrible picture (он пришел с ужасным рисунком),’ said the Head Chief (сказал Главный Вождь), — ’ a picture that showed you were full of spears (с рисунком, который показывал = на котором ты был полон копий = ты был утыкан множеством копий).’

‘Er — um — Pr’aps I’d better ‘splain that I gave him that picture (э — гм — возможно, мне лучше объяснить, что это я дала ему этот рисунок),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи), but she did not feel quite comfy (но она чувствовала себя не совсем уютно).

‘There weren’t any,’ said Tegumai. ‘My only visitor this morning was the poor fellow that you are trying to choke. Aren’t you well, or are you ill, O Tribe of Tegumai?’

‘He came with a horrible picture,’ said the Head Chief, — ’ a picture that showed you were full of spears.’

‘Er — um — Pr’aps I’d better ‘splain that I gave him that picture,’ said Taffy, but she did not feel quite comfy.

‘You!’ said the Tribe of Tegumai all together. ‘Small-person-with-no-manners-who-ought-to-be-spanked! You?’

‘Taffy dear, I’m afraid we’re in for a little trouble (Тэффи дорогая, боюсь, что у нас небольшие неприятности / мы попали в небольшую переделку[108]; to be in for trouble — получать наказание),’ said her Daddy (сказал ее Папочка), and put his arm round her (и обнял ее /своей/ рукой), so she didn’t care (поэтому ей было все равно).

‘Explain! Explain! Explain (объясни! объясни! объясни)!’ said the Head Chief of the Tribe of Tegumai (сказал Главный Вождь Племени Тегумая), and he hopped on one foot (и он подпрыгнул / запрыгал на одной ноге).

‘Taffy dear, I’m afraid we’re in for a little trouble,’ said her Daddy, and put his arm round her, so she didn’t care.

‘I wanted the Stranger-man to fetch Daddy’s spear (я хотела, чтобы Незнакомец принес Папочкину острогу), so I drawded it (поэтому я нарисовала ее),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘There wasn’t lots of spears (там не было много копий). ‘I wanted the Stranger-man to fetch Daddy’s spear, so I drawded it,’ said Taffy. ‘There wasn’t lots of spears. There was only one spear. I drawded it three times to make sure. I couldn’t help it looking as if it stuck into Daddy’s head — there wasn’t room on the birch-bark; and those things that Mummy called bad people are my beavers. I drawded them to show him the way through the swamp; and I drawded Mummy at the mouth of the Cave looking pleased because he is a nice Stranger-man, and I think you are just the stupidest people in the world,’ said Taffy. ‘He is a very nice man. Why have you filled his hair with mud? Wash him!’

Nobody said anything at all for a long time (долгое время никто ничего /не/ говорил), till the Head Chief laughed (пока Главный Вождь /не/ засмеялся); then the Stranger-man (who was at least a Tewara) laughed (потом засмеялся Незнакомец (который, по крайней мере, был Теварцем)); then Tegumai laughed (потом засмеялся Тегумай) till he fell down flat on the bank (пока он /не/ упал плашмя на берег); then all the Tribe laughed more and worse and louder (потом засмеялось все Племя больше, и хуже, и громче). The only people who did not laugh were Teshumai Tewindrow and all the Neolithic ladies (единственными людьми, которые не смеялись, были Тешумай Тевиндроу и все Неолитические дамы). They were very polite to all their husbands (они были очень вежливы ко всем своим мужьям), and said ‘idiot!’ ever so often (и крайне часто говорили «болван!»).

Then the Head Chief of the Tribe of Tegumai cried and said and sang (тогда Главный Вождь Племени Тегумая вскричал и сказал нараспев), ‘O Small-person-without-any-manners-who-ought-to-be-spanked (О Маленькая невоспитанная особа, которую следует отшлепать), you’ve hit upon a great invention (ты наткнулась на великое изобретение; to hit upon — случайно обнаружить)!’

Nobody said anything at all for a long time, till the Head Chief laughed; then the Stranger-man (who was at least a Tewara) laughed; then Tegumai laughed till he fell down flat on the bank; then all the Tribe laughed more and worse and louder. The only people who did not laugh were Teshumai Tewindrow and all the Neolithic ladies. They were very polite to all their husbands, and said ‘idiot!’ ever so often.

Then the Head Chief of the Tribe of Tegumai cried and said and sang, ‘O Small-person-without-any-manners-who-ought-to-be-spanked, you’ve hit upon a great invention!’

‘I didn’t intend to (я не хотела; to intend — намереваться, планировать); I only wanted Daddy’s black-handled spear (мне только нужна была Папочкина острога с черной рукояткой),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи).

‘Never mind (не беда; never mind — ничего, неважно, не беспокойтесь, не беда). It is a great invention (это великое изобретение), and some day men will call it writing (и когда-нибудь люди назовут это письмом). At present it is only pictures (сейчас это только картинки / изображения), and, as we have seen to-day (и, как мы увидели сегодня), pictures are not always properly understood (картинки не всегда понимают правильно; properly — должным образом, как следует, правильно). But a time will come (но наступит время), O Babe of Tegumai (О Милое Дитя Тегумая), when we shall make letters (когда мы создадим буквы) — all twenty-six of ‘em (все двадцать шесть[109] /из них/), — and when we shall be able to read as well as to write (и когда мы сможем как читать, так и писать), and then we shall always say exactly (и тогда мы всегда будем выражать словами в точности то; to say — выражать словами, сообщать, передавать) what we mean without any mistakes (что /мы/ имеем в виду, без каких-либо ошибок). Let the Neolithic ladies wash the mud out of the stranger’s hair (пусть Неолитические дамы вымоют грязь из волос чужака).’
