‘H’m,’ said Taffy. ‘That’s a mixy noise. The end part is ah-carp-fish-mouth; but what can we do about the front part? Yer-yer-yer and ah! Ya!’

‘It’s very like the carp-fish-mouth noise. Let’s draw another bit of the carp-fish and join ‘em,’ said her Daddy. He was quite incited too.

‘No. If they’re joined, I’ll forget. Draw it separate. Draw his tail. If he’s standing on his head the tail will come first. ‘Sides, I think I can draw tails easiest,’ said Taffy.

‘A good notion (хорошая мысль),’ said Tegumai (сказал Тегумай). ‘Here’s a carp-fish tail for the yer-noise (вот хвост карпа для звука Й[114]).’ And he drew this (и он нарисовал это). (4.)

‘I’ll try now (сейчас я попробую),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘’Member I can’t draw like you, Daddy (помни, что я не умею рисовать как ты, Папочка). Will it do if I just draw the split part of the tail (сойдет = ничего, если я нарисую лишь разделенную часть хвоста), and the sticky-down line for where it joins (и трудную линию вниз вместо того места, где он соединяется)?’ And she drew this (и она нарисовала это). Her Daddy nodded (ее Папочка кивнул), and his eyes were shiny bright with ‘citement (и его глаза ярко заблестели от волнения).

‘That’s quite easy (это очень легко),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘You make your mouth all around like an egg or a stone (ты делаешь свой рот совершенно круглым, как яйцо или камень). So an egg or a stone will do for that (поэтому для него подойдет яйцо или камень).’

‘You can’t always find eggs or stones (не всегда можно найти яйца или камни). We’ll have to scratch a round something like one (нам придется нацарапать что-нибудь круглое, как это[115]).’ And he drew this (и он нарисовал это). (6.)

 ‘My gracious (Батюшки)!’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи), ‘what a lot of noise-pictures we’ve made (как много картинок-звуков мы сделали), — carp-mouth, carp-tail, and egg (рот карпа, хвост карпа и яйцо)! Now, make another noise, Daddy (теперь произнеси еще один звук, Папочка).’

‘Ssh!’ said her Daddy (Сш! — сказал ее Папочка), and frowned to himself (и нахмурился про себя), but Taffy was too incited to notice (но Тэффи была слишком взволнована, чтобы заметить /это/).

‘That’s quite easy,’ said Taffy. ‘You make your mouth all around like an egg or a stone. So an egg or a stone will do for that.’

‘It’s a noise just the same (все равно это звук). It’s the noise a snake makes, Daddy (Папочка, это звук, которые издает змея), when it is thinking and doesn’t want to be disturbed (когда она думает и не хочет, чтобы ей мешали). Let’s make the ssh-noise a snake (давай сделаем звук Сс /в виде/ змеи[116]). Will this do (так сойдет)?’ And she drew this (и она нарисовала это). (7.)

‘Eh, what?’ said her Daddy. ‘I meant I was thinking, and didn’t want to be disturbed.’

‘It’s a noise just the same. It’s the noise a snake makes, Daddy, when it is thinking and doesn’t want to be disturbed. Let’s make the ssh-noise a snake. Will this do?’ And she drew this. (7.)

‘There,’ she said (вот, — сказала она). ‘That’s another s’prise-secret (это еще один сюпризный секрет). When you draw a hissy-snake by the door of your little back-cave (когда ты нарисуешь шипящую змею у двери твоей маленькой пещерки в задней части /большой пещеры/) where you mend the spears (где ты чинишь копья), I’ll know you’re thinking hard (я буду знать, что ты усердно думаешь); and I’ll come in most mousy-quiet (и я войду очень тихо, как мышка). And if you draw it on a tree by the river (а если ты нарисуешь ее на дереве у реки) when you’re fishing (когда ты будешь ловить рыбу), I’ll know you want me to walk most most mousy-quiet (я буду знать, что ты хочешь, чтобы я шла очень тихо-тихо, как мышка), so as not to shake the banks (чтобы не колебать берег).’

When you draw a hissy-snake by the door of your little back-cave where you mend the spears, I’ll know you’re thinking hard; and I’ll come in most mousy-quiet. And if you draw it on a tree by the river when you’re fishing, I’ll know you want me to walk most most mousy-quiet, so as not to shake the banks.’

‘Perfectly true (совершенно верно),’ said Tegumai (сказал Тегумай). ‘And there’s more in this game than you think (и в этой игре больше, чем ты думаешь). Taffy, dear, I’ve a notion (Тэффи, дорогая, у меня /такое/ представление) that your Daddy’s daughter has hit upon the finest thing (что дочь твоего Папочки наткнулась на самую потрясающую вещь = самое потрясающее) that there ever was since the Tribe of Tegumai took to using shark’s teeth (что когда-либо было с тех пор, как Племя Тегумая стало использовать акульи зубы; to take to — привыкать, начинать заниматься, приспосабливаться /к чему-либо/) instead of flints for their spear-heads (вместо кремня для своих наконечников копий). I believe we’ve found out the big secret of the world (я думаю, что мы раскрыли важную тайну мира).’

‘Why?’ said Taffy (как это? — спросила Тэффи), and her eyes shone too with incitement (и ее глаза тоже засияли от волнения; to shine — сиять, блестеть).

‘I’ll show (я покажу),’ said her Daddy (сказал ее Папочка). ‘What’s water in the Tegumai language (как будет вода на Тегумайском языке)?’

‘Perfectly true,’ said Tegumai. ‘And there’s more in this game than you think. Taffy, dear, I’ve a notion that your Daddy’s daughter has hit upon the finest thing that there ever was since the Tribe of Tegumai took to using shark’s teeth instead of flints for their spear-heads. I believe we’ve found out the big secret of the world.’

‘Why?’ said Taffy, and her eyes shone too with incitement.

‘I’ll show,’ said her Daddy. ‘What’s water in the Tegumai language?’

‘Ya, of course (ЙА, конечно), and it means river too (и это означает также реку) — like Wagai-ya — the Wagai river (как Вагай-йа — река Вагай).’

‘What is bad water (/а/ как будет плохая вода) that gives you fever (от которой бывает лихорадка) if you drink it (если выпьешь ее) — black water — swamp-water (черная вода — болотная вода)?’

‘Yo, of course (разумеется, ЙО).’

‘Now look (теперь слушай),’ said her Daddy (сказал Папочка). ‘S’pose you saw this scratched by the side of a pool in the beaver-swamp (предположим, что ты увидела это, нацарапанным возле лужи в бобровом болоте)?’ And he drew this (и он нарисовал это). (8.)

‘Carp-tail and round egg (хвост карпа и круглое яйцо). Two noises mixed (два звука смешались)! Yo, bad water (ЙО, плохая вода),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘‘Course I wouldn’t drink that water (конечно, я не пила бы эту воду) because I’d know you said it was bad (потому что я знала бы, что ты сказал, что она плохая).’

‘But I needn’t be near the water at all (но мне совсем не обязательно быть возле воды). I might be miles away, hunting, and still (я мог бы быть в милях оттуда на охоте и тем не менее) — ‘

‘Not yet,’ said Tegumai; ‘not till we’ve gone a little further. Let’s see. Yo is bad water, but so is food cooked on the fire, isn’t it?’ And he drew this. (9.)
