But towards evening (но к вечеру), when people and things grow restless and tired (когда люди и твари становятся беспокойными и уставшими), there came up the Man (пришел Человек) (With his own little girl-daughter (со своей маленькой девочкой-дочкой)?) — Yes, with his own best beloved little girl-daughter sitting upon his shoulder (да, со своей самой любименькой маленькой девочкой-дочкой, сидящей у него на плече), and he said (и сказал), ‘What is this play, Eldest Magician (что это за игра, Старейший Волшебник)?’ And the Eldest Magician said (и Старейший Волшебник сказал), ‘Ho, Son of Adam (эй, Сын Адама), this is the play of the Very Beginning (это игра Самого Начала); but you are too wise for this play (но ты слишком мудр для этой игры).’ And the Man saluted and said (а Человек воздал почести и сказал), ‘Yes, I am too wise for this play (да, я слишком мудр для этой игры); but see that you make all the Animals obedient to me (но позаботься о том, чтобы сделать всех Животных покорными мне).’

And the play went on (и игра продолжалась) till there were no more Animals left without orders (пока не осталось больше Животных без приказов = которым не отдали приказаний); and the Eldest Magician wiped the fine dust off his hands (а Старейший Волшебник отер мелкую пыль со своих рук) and walked about the world to see how the Animals were playing (и пошел по миру[131] = по белу свету посмотреть, как играют Животные).

Now, while the two were talking together, Pau Amma the Crab, who was next in the game, scuttled off sideways and stepped into the sea, saying to himself, ‘I will play my play alone in the deep waters, and I will never be obedient to this son of Adam.’ Nobody saw him go away except the little girl-daughter where she leaned on the Man’s shoulder. And the play went on till there were no more Animals left without orders; and the Eldest Magician wiped the fine dust off his hands and walked about the world to see how the Animals were playing.

‘Payah kun,’ said the Eldest Magician (паях кун, — сказал Старейший Волшебник), meaning (что означало), ‘That is quite right (/это/ совершенно правильно)’; and he breathed upon the great rocks and lumps of earth (и он дохнул на огромные скалы и глыбы земли) that All-the-Elephant-there-was had thrown up (которые выбросил Весь Слон, что был; to throw up — извергать; выбрасывать), and they became the great Himalayan Mountains (и они стали великими Гималайскими горами; to become — становиться), and you can look them out on the map (и вы можете отыскать их на карте; to look out — увидеть, высмотреть).

Then he went South and found All-the-Turtle-there-was scratching with his flippers in the sand that had been got ready for him, and the sand and the rocks whirled through the air and fell far off into the sea.

‘Kun?” said All-the-Turtle-there-was.

‘Payah kun,’ said the Eldest Magician; and he breathed upon the sand and the rocks, where they had fallen in the sea, and they became the most beautiful islands of Borneo, Celebes, Sumatra, Java, and the rest of the Malay Archipelago, and you can look them out on the map!

By and by the Eldest Magician met the Man on the banks of the Perak river (вскоре Старейший Волшебник встретил Человека на берегах реки Перак), and said (и сказал), ‘Ho! Son of Adam, are all the Animals obedient to you (эй, Сын Адама, все ли Животные повинуются тебе)?’

‘Yes,’ said the Man (да, — сказал Человек).

By and by the Eldest Magician met the Man on the banks of the Perak river, and said, ‘Ho! Son of Adam, are all the Animals obedient to you?’

‘Yes,’ said the Man.

‘Is all the Earth obedient to you?’

‘Yes,’ said the Man.

‘Is all the Sea obedient to you?’

‘No,’ said the Man (нет, — сказал Человек). ‘Once a day and once a night (один раз в день и один раз в ночь) the Sea runs up the Perak river (Море поднимается по реке Перак) and drives the sweet-water back into the forest (и загоняет пресную воду обратно в лес), so that my house is made wet (так что мой дом делается = становится мокрым); once a day and once a night it runs down the river (раз в день и раз в ночь оно опускается по реке) and draws all the water after it (и уносит за собой всю воду; to draw — тащить; отводить /воду/), so that there is nothing left but mud (так что не остается ничего кроме ила), and my canoe is upset (и мое каноэ опрокидывается).
